Puglia in the summer is one of the most sought-after tourist spots in the world. With its white sandy beaches, glittering turquoise blue waters, and to top it all off — kayaking!

Early in the summer season, ESN Lecce organized a kayak experience for interested Erasmus attendees, offering the experience at just a fraction of the regular cost. Normally, such an outing might set you back about 25 EUR or more. However, ESN offered it for only 10 EUR per person.

Off the coast of Porto Cesareo, along the Ionian Sea, lie few small uninhabited islands that are only accessible by water. The group converged at the Porto Cesareo dock in the afternoon, and that's when the excitement began! Each participant was provided with a professional life-saving vest (making the experience open even for those without swimming skills), instructions on maneuvering the kayak, and snorkeling masks for those eager to see underwater wonders. And with that, they set off.

The journey was both intense and delightful. Gliding over the waters, participants quickly grasped kayaking's basics. Some paddled at a leisurely pace while others sped ahead, but the pace was irrelevant; it was the unique experience that counted. The first island stop offered a chance for a short break: snacks, drinks, a refreshing dip in the sea, introductions, and the forging of new friendships.

The next destination was the second island. By this point, kayaking's physical demands had started to show, with many feeling a bit tired. However, this larger island, with its wild vegetation and sparse human presence, was the perfect spot for a more extended break. Amidst more snacks, drinks, and Erasmus journey stories, scenic photos were captured, and sunbathing on an uninhabited island became a memorable moment. The guide also shared fascinating snippets about the island's history, ensuring everyone was both entertained and informed.

As the sun began its descent towards the horizon, the guide decided it was time to head back. Yet, the most breathtaking part of the day was still to come. Midway through the return journey, the dazzling hues of the setting sun held everyones gaze. The kayaks slowed, some reached for their phones to snap photos, while others simply soaked in the mesmerizing view. From a distance, faint music could be heard drifting from a beachside cafeteria. The ambiance was nothing short of surreal. Before the blanket of darkness could settle, the group made it back to the docks. Though tired, spirits were high as they wrapped up the day with aperitifs and snacks at a local cafeteria.
